Zero-Emissions Marine Vehicles

DB Schenker plans to operate a zero-emission autonomous coastal container feeder for Ekornes ASA in Norway

DB Schenker plans to operate a zero-emission autonomous coastal container feeder for Ekornes ASA in Norway.

“The vessel will operate between Ekornes’ own port, Ikornnes, and the port of Ålesund, which serves the main ocean freight ports in Europe. The ship will complete the 43-km (23-NM) journey within three hours, at a speed of 7.7 knots. The vessel will be 50 meters long and will be able to carry 300 deadweight tons of cargo. It is designed from the keel up for autonomous and zero-emission operation. It will run without a crew but will be monitored and controlled by staff at Masterly’s Remote Operation Center (ROC), whose team members include certified navigators and naval engineers.

“The planned two-way data communication solution between the vessel and the ROC is destined to be another game-changer in the ocean freight sector.”

Future: Fast Forward partners apply to the PERTE VEC with the aim of turning Spain into a European electric vehicle hub

“This investment of 10 billion euros will electrify Spain and Europe’s second-largest automotive manufacturer, creating a battery Gigafactory in Sagunto, enabling the production of electric vehicles at the Martorell and Pamplona plants, and building-up a comprehensive supplier ecosystem. This is the biggest industrial investment ever made in Spain.” —Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Group

“We will build the battery Gigafactory with an investment of more than 3 billion euros, but the PERTE funds are essential if we are to realize our ambition of turning Spain into a European hub for electric vehicles.

“The battery factory in Sagunto will occupy a 200-hectare site and will be the third of six Gigafactories the Group plans to build across Europe. For our battery ramp-up in Spain and Europe, sustainability and a closed value chain loop are key. To name a few aspects: with the electricity to supply the Gigafactory coming 100 percent from renewable energies, with a local-for-local approach and by recovering valuable raw materials on site, our new factory in Valencia will be a blueprint for circular economy. ” —Thomas Schmall, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the Board of SEAT SA
